One school now has electricity and water. We started by buying land with a new school building. A team went there in 2007 and built a new classroom. The school has shoes for all the children, school lunches, and a stock of textbooks and two sewing machines for the women’s cooperative.
A more rural school now has their sanitation block complete with toilets, basins and fresh paint as well as the completed septic system. VillageSteps provided funds to repair their water pump, provide lunches, and provided a six month supply of sanitary products for the female students.
The newest is a Community School in a poor area.
The current facility for primary education is a church building without windows, floor or doors. There are no desks or chairs. There is no kitchen for preparation of a meal for the children. Students are being taught life skills through poetry and drama.
VillageSteps provided funding for the purchase of a piece of land on which a school can be built. A clean water bore hole has been dug and a pump, tank and tank stand are now in place (see photo above and on News page). A mission team started two classroom buildings that now need windows, doors, and floors. The school also needs a toilet facility before the school can move there.
There are five unpaid staff now teaching the children. They would appreciate training and some stipends as an incentive, as they are assisting children who cannot afford any fees.
At the school for the deaf, VillageSteps provided a second sewing machine for guardians to learn tailoring.
We are blessed to have seen the growth and health of the students now in school. Many of the students have outgrown their clothing and shoes, due to the better diet and attention they are receiving. We look forward to them having field trips and interaction with the teams that will be visiting them in the coming months, and to equipping them with balls and uniforms for athletics. The sense of pride and belonging that this creates makes them forget their struggles and gives them hope to continue.
